Breaking Barriers: Nicollete Maphiwa’s Journey into Welding
In a world where opportunities for young women in male-dominated fields are still scarce, Nicollete Maphiwa, an 18-year-old from Nkulumane 10, is forging her own path—one weld at a time.
Growing up in a family of six, Nicollete’s education was cut short when she had to drop out of Form 3 due to financial difficulties. With no means to pay school fees and few opportunities in her community, she found herself at home, feeling stuck. But in July 2023, a simple conversation with a community member led her to The Nook, and her journey took an exciting turn.
Discovering a Passion for Welding
At first, the Nook was just an escape from boredom. But soon, Nicollete found herself drawn to an unexpected craft—welding. Traditionally seen as a trade for men, welding sparked something in her, and she quickly immersed herself in hands-on projects.
Today, she has already completed three major welding pieces:
• A chicken cage
• An envelope-shaped window frame
• A steel sliding screen gate for her verandah, which she is currently working on
All of these she taught herself, proving that with passion and the right environment, learning knows no boundaries.
More Than Just Skills—A Newfound Confidence
Beyond welding, The Nook has transformed Nicollete’s confidence. Wednesday group discussions have helped her break out of her shell, making socializing easier. She also picked up practical skills like using a laptop, something she had never done before but now finds exciting.
She describes The Nook as a peaceful yet lively space, where learning happens through collaboration rather than formal instruction. The supportive environment has empowered her to think beyond limitations and dream big.
A Future Forged in Steel
Nicollete’s goal? To become a professional welder and start her own business—a dream that once felt impossible but now seems within reach. She is eager to continue working on welding projects that help her community, proving that no career is off-limits for women.
Her story is a reminder that opportunity can change everything. Sometimes, all it takes is a space that nurtures curiosity, passion, and self-belief. And for Nicollete, that space is The Nook.
To young women out there: Don’t let society define what you can or cannot do. Forge your own path, just like Nicollete.
