Smart Agriculture & Sustainability

Recognising the importance of agriculture in livelihoods, we promote smart agricultural practices to enhance food security and income generation.

We focus on practices that promote soil health, conserve water, minimise pollution, protect biodiversity, and support the well-being of farmers and rural communities. By empowering farmers with knowledge and resources, we aim to improve agricultural productivity, enhance resilience to climate change, and promote long-term sustainability in our community. With our initiatives, we are balancing environmental health, economic profitability, social and economic equity.

Kensington - Agriculture Training Center

Every  project begins with a deep understanding of the environment—and our recent hydrological survey at the Kensington Center is no exception. Over the past week, we’ve been analyzing water flow patterns, groundwater levels, and other key environmental factors to prepare for borehole drilling and optimize our ongoing water-related initiatives.

Why a Hydrological Survey?

Before drilling a borehole, it’s crucial to gather scientific data to determine the best location, depth, and long-term sustainability of the water source. By studying groundwater movement and surrounding environmental conditions, we ensure that our efforts are both efficient and environmentally responsible.

Impact on Our Projects:

The insights gained from this survey will directly inform our water purification and conservation efforts, helping us:

• Identify reliable water sources for the community.

• Enhance sustainability in our water projects.

• Reduce risks associated with drilling and groundwater depletion.

Dive into the future of farming with our groundbreaking Hydroponics Project, pioneered by two innovative learners from the Swizimtrust Bulawayo Nook. This initiative is more than just agriculture; it's a journey into the heart of sustainable farming techniques, where curiosity meets technology in the pursuit of knowledge.

Project Overview

Our ambitious learners embarked on an exploratory mission to master the art of hydroponics—the soil-free solution to modern agriculture. Their journey through hydroponic farming involved intricate system design, meticulous nutrient management, and the cultivation of crops all within a self-guided learning framework.

Step-by-Step Breakdown

  1. Research and Planning: The project kicked off with an in-depth exploration of hydroponic systems. Learners delved into various models, nutrient solutions, and crop suitability, crafting a detailed project blueprint that set the stage for innovation.

  2. From Design to Reality: Utilizing cutting-edge 3D digital drawing tools, the learners transformed their designs into a tangible hydroponic system using locally sourced materials. Key components such as the nutrient reservoir, growth mediums, and automated lighting systems were engineered to support an optimal growing environment.

  3. Monitoring and Optimization: Precision was paramount. The team regularly monitored essential factors like nutrient concentration, ambient temperature, and humidity, adjusting protocols to maintain peak conditions, ensuring the health and vigor of crops such as lettuce, onions, and tomatoes.

  4. Data-Driven Insights: Every leaf and root was a source of data, enabling our learners to measure plant growth, yield, and system efficiency. This ongoing analysis highlighted the robustness of hydroponics, showcasing significant resource savings in water usage and spatial requirements compared to traditional farming methods.
